Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy charged with DUI
Pitcher placed on disabled list on Saturday
Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in Overland Park, Kan., authorities said on Tuesday.
Duffy was charged on Sunday evening and is scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 19, the Kansas City Star reported.
The Royals announced that Duffy will make a statement later on Tuesday and general manager Dayton Moore will also make a statement and take questions from reporters.
Moore issued the following statement earlier on Tuesday:
“We are obviously disappointed in the news we have received regarding Danny Duffy’s DUI arrest on Sunday night. Danny was not part of the team traveling back from Cleveland on Sunday because he had returned to Kansas City a day earlier to undergo an MRI examination.
“We are still in the early stages of gathering the details, but I do know that Danny has always been accountable as a member of this organization and we expect the same accountability from him as this process moves forward.
“We obviously do not condone anyone driving while under the influence, but this is now a legal matter and we will allow the process to unfold and cannot comment any further.”
Duffy was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a low-grade pronator strain in his elbow. The 28-year-old owns an 8-8 mark with a 3.78 ERA in 21 starts with Kansas City this season.
